Perfume FAQ
-
Are your Perfumes Vegan and Cruelty Free?
Our perfumes are free from any animal-derived materials and we do not test on animals. (Additionally, my animals aren't allowed in the lab, ever!). However, it's probable that most aroma chemicals have been tested on animals at some point in time. This is also true for the vast majority of newly discovered aroma chemicals, including naturally derived ones. Most aroma chemical companies do test new aroma chemicals on animals as required in certain countries. Many have committed to stop doing this, but have not given a date as to when that will happen (Ex: Givaudan, IFF, Firmenich). Therefore, our perfumes are not considered cruelty free.
-
What concentration are your perfumes?
Our perfumes are all 25% fragrance.
-
Are your perfumes IFRA compliant?
Yes, all of our perfumes are compliant with current IFRA recommendations.
-
Are your perfumes natural?
Our perfumes are made with a mixture of natural and synthetic materials.
-
What is the difference between natural and synthetic materials?
Natural materials are derived from "natural processes". These processes require that the material is extracted from a natural source in a way that involves minimal processing and does not create unnatural products. Natural aroma chemicals include naturally extracted isolates, essential oils, absolutes, resinoids, concretes, and similar extractions.
While synthetic ingredients can be chemically identical to naturals, they are not derived in a natural manner. For example, alpha pinene is found in many natural materials, but can be synthetically created as well. When alpha pinene is artificially synthesized, it is considered synthetic. Synthetic materials, of course, can also be exclusively synthetic and not naturally occuring. Basically, anything that is not extracted from a natural material in a "natural" manner (as described above) is synthetic.
-
Do your perfumes contain parabens or pthalates?
No, our perfumes don't contain parabens or pthalates. However, neither do the vast majority of perfumes. Neither of these are standard ingredients in perfumes.
Many fragranced products that are not perfumes like shampoos, lotions, body sprays, home fragrance, detergent, etc. do contain pthalates and parabens. I believe that's where much of the rumors around perfume come from.
Some indie perfumery houses use fragrance oils to create scents, and some fragrance oils do contain pthalates. However, we do not use fragrance oils. Additionally, many of the popular fragrance oil retailers have phased out or mostly phased out pthalate containing blends.
-
Do you use fragrance oils?
No, all of our perfumes are made using genuine perfumery materials like individual aroma chemicals, essential oils, and absolutes.
-
What does "potential allergen" mean?
Most of the chemicals currently restricted by the IFRA are restricted due to their potential to cause dermatitis reactions in sensitive individuals and people who are allergic to them. I mark which of the chemicals in our ingredients lists are potential allergens with little asterisks for those who might be sensitive or allergic to them.

How high should my bottles be filled?
We can't give a visual fill level that is normal for our bottles as not every bottle is the same. 30mL will typically come up just below the start of the shoulder for our bottles. We usually add a bit more to make them look fuller. However, there does need to be a certain amount of air in the bottle in order for the pump sprayers to work.
Same goes for our samples. They technically are 1.7mL bottles, but they fit a little over 2mL of liquid. The air allowance is for the pump sprayers. We typically fill them a little over 1.7mL so they don't look egregiously empty.
